‘92 CBR600F2
This was the first bike I ever “built”. A 1993 CBR600F2 picked up from my cousin as a salvaged bike. The frame was straight and mechanically it just needed some love.
Hunting through motorcycle bone-yards looking parts was like a quest. Sometimes you go home empty handed and other times you find a treasure.
One day I stopped at a Honda dealership between service calls. Chatting with a guy on the parts counter he suddenly had a stunned look on his face and cutting me off mid-sentence saying, “Follow me”.
At the bottom of a steep set of concrete stairs, in a dark and dingy basement, we squeezed through shelves full of boxes and random parts. The stunned look from upstairs was him remembering a full set of fiberglass front race fairings that would fit my bike. He was supposed to have returned them years ago and had completely forgotten to. The stunned look had been a mixture of “Oh shit” and “Wait a second!!!”.
To avoid being found out, he sold me the fairings for next to nothing.
The picture above tells the story of a 20-something year old kid broke as broke could be. I rented out rooms in the house to make the mortgage and still came home to the utilities being shut off now and then. There was always a project leaking oil in the driveway. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate my neighbors for being so patient with us.
My buddy Otis helped me fix and paint the fairings, and I designed some custom graphics.
When this bike was being re-built, there was no such thing as a CBR600RR. Other riders would almost break their neck when we passed or they’d turn around and follow me to see the new model. Much to their surprise when I revealed that it was an F2.
Honda did finally release the immensely popular and iconic 600RR in 2003.
My parents were visiting Park City, UT for a weekend so I buzzed up the mountain on the now street ready machine. My mom was speechless after her first ride on a sport bike.
After the bike was mobile, it was to the finer details. A new exhaust for more top end speed and re-geared it for more bottom end torque.
